Deer story #1 (I'm sure there will be more to follow)
Thursday Morning Nov 6th. I receive a phone call at 8 am. "There is a buck and doe out in the field SE of your house. I'll pick you up in 15 minutes and drop you off and drive the deer to you." ”OK.”
I get ready. My neighbor, Dave, picks me up and says. "Just bring one arrow. They will be running and you will only get one shot. ( Note: this is something that I normally don’t do. I always take a full quiver! ) “Dummy me, "ok". Dave drops me of in the kill zone. I sit in a plowed field, in full camo for 45 minutes........no deer. Call Dave, "where are the deer?" Dave, "They are on the gravel road 100 yards north of you. Wait, they are coming back." Dave gives them 10 minutes to settle back down and then walks out to them to push them towards me. I decide I’m in a bad spot so I move to a dam on a small pond behind me.
After another 45 minutes I call Dave back, "where are the deer?" Dave " I don't know. They were headed right for you. I can't see them any more." Puzzled, I look up over the dam and "DAMN" they are right there.....Looking at me. So I did what any good bow hunter would do, I hide behind my bow! ---- For an hour!! I stood there staring this buck down for an hour!
Finally the doe lies down in some grass (50 yards from me.) Then the buck lies down. Yes victory is mine!! Do I leave and come back later or attack? YEP, ATTACK. I am only 100 yards off of a corner of 2 gravels roads. I now have an audience. So I start to creep in on the sleeping deer. I slowly close the distance. My goal was to get up against a thicket of willow trees to use as cover. I got to the trees and I was within 20 yards of the buck and doe. I pause for a moment to get myself under control. I look down to my left and notice a pair of "shed" antlers. Hey wait just one second those antlers have a neck attached to them. Holy crap! There's an 8 point buck sleeping 3 feet, 3 Feet, from me. Quick, shoot this one or continue on? SHOOT this one! Only, I can't see his body. Guess about where it is and shoot. SO, shoot I did! And watched the arrow hit a small branch and bounce out.
Well all hell broke loose. The buck I shot at jumped up, along with 2 other bucks. To my right, another buck jumps up 15 feet from me. The buck I was trying for jumps up along with the doe. I'm in trouble!! The deer only ran about 20 yards and stopped. I took a step to the left and got in among the trees. The deer came back in!! I'm covered in DOE IN HEAT scent, NO ARROWS and fearing I was about to be forced into relations with a deer. So I did what any good bow hunter would do, I pulled my knife......................Yeah right!! I ran as fast as I could to the nearest pick up and dove in. Dave yelled, "What the hell are you doing! They were coming back in!" I could only reply " Who is the dummy that said I only needed one arrow?"
This whole hunt took 3 hours! After which no deer were killed.
Hope you enjoyed the hunt as much as I did. I only wish someone had been video taping it. It was quite amazing!
